What a UK invoice must include

To be a valid invoice, and to actually get paid, it should clearly show a few things:

  • The word Invoice, and a unique invoice number
  • Your name or business name, address and contact details
  • The client's name and address
  • The date, and the date payment is due
  • A clear description of what you're charging for, with amounts
  • The total due, plus VAT if you're registered
  • How to pay you (bank details or a payment link)

Number your invoices in a simple sequence so you never repeat one. Set a clear due date, usually 14 or 30 days, and state it plainly. If you'd rather fill this in on screen and download a PDF, use our free invoice generator. New to invoicing? Read how to write an invoice, and if a payment goes past due, our late payment interest calculator shows what you can charge.

fills this in for you, tracks who's paid, and keeps every client and number in one private app. Free to start.
