Receipt vs invoice, what's the difference?
An invoice is a request for payment. A receipt is proof that payment was made. You send the invoice first; once it's paid, a receipt confirms it, which customers often want for their own records.
A simple receipt should show who paid, what for, how much, the date, and how it was paid. Number them in sequence like invoices so your records stay tidy.
- Who paid and who received it
- What the payment covered
- The amount and date
- Payment method and any reference
- That it was paid in full (or the balance remaining)
