What is a tech pack (and when you actually need one)?
If you are starting a product or clothing brand, “tech pack” is a term you will hit fast. Here is what it means and when you need one.
What a tech pack is
A tech pack is the spec sheet for a product. It is the document you hand a manufacturer so they can make exactly what is in your head, without guessing. Think of it as the instruction manual for your product.
What goes in it
A good tech pack usually includes:
- Technical drawings of the product, front and back.
- Measurements for every size (the size grid).
- Materials and fabrics, with weights and compositions.
- Colours, with references so they match.
- Construction details: stitching, seams, hardware, labels.
- Trims and packaging notes.
The more precise it is, the fewer surprises when your samples and stock arrive.
When you need one
You need a tech pack before you ask a manufacturer to make samples. Sending a factory a screenshot or a mood board and hoping for the best is how brands end up with 300 units they hate. The tech pack is what turns “here’s my idea” into “here’s exactly what to make.”
You do not need one to sketch or plan. You need it the moment you move from concept to production.
Where it fits in the bigger picture
A tech pack is one piece of running a brand. The others are inventory, true landed cost, pricing and wholesale. Keeping them together is what separates a hobby from a business.
The Brand app in Sedonis generates tech packs and line sheets from your product data, tracks inventory by size, and shows your real margins, all in one private place. Free to start.
